Gouripur (Mymensingh): Amar Ekushey, the Language Martyrs’ Day and the International Mother Language Day was observed in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh district in a befitting manner, paying rich tributes to the language martyrs on February 21, 2020.

People from all walks of life placed floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar of Shahid Harun Park in the middle town and elsewhere in the upazila, recalling the supreme sacrifice made by the language heroes, who laid down their lives for the mother tongue ‘Bangla.’

The beginning of  Amar Ekushey, the Language Martyrs’ Day started at zero hours of midnight,Md Moffazal Hossain Khan, Uazila Chairman, Sejuti Dhar, UNO of  Gouripur upazila, Mayor Syed Rafiqul Islam  and other officials of the upazila administration and the police department,  members of Gouripur Press Cub, Gouripur Sangbadik Oykka Forum and Gouripur Reporters Club, local political leaders, freedom fighters and students of different educational institutions  placed floral wreaths  at the Central Shaheed Minar of the upazila town. Soon the Central Shaheed Minar was bedecked with flowers and wreaths. Volunteers and councilors of  Gouripur Pourashava spent a hard night tackling the streams of people who lined up in a long queue for their turn to place wreaths at the Minar.

In the morning, different organizations and institutes, including Gouripur Pilot Girls High School, Nurul Amin Khan High School ,Gouripur R.K. Govt High School, Agradut High School, Gouripur Govt College, Gouripur Women College, Gouripur Govt Technical School and College singing in chorus the song of Amar Ekushey and carrying banners and placards, to pay homage to the language martyrs which paraded through the main roads of the town and joined to the Central Shaheed Minar and also their respective Shaheed Minars.

Besides, different political parties, socio-cultural and professional bodies as well as institutions observed Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day with elaborate programmes throughout the day.

They wore black badges, hoisted black flags, kept the national and organisational flags at half-mast, brought out processions, placed wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar, held discussion meetings, poetry recitation sessions, cultural programmes, street drama, painting competitions, an essay writing competition and photographic exhibitions.
